چکیده

The distribution and biology of the beaver beetle, Platypsyllus castoris Ritsema, are summarized for North America. In light of the fact that the beetle uses two beaver species as hosts which have seemingly been separated for some five million years on two continents, it is asked if the Nearctic and Palearctic beetle populations are really the same species. 86 Volume 20, No. 1-2, March-June, 2006, INSECTA MUNDI and combined both into the subfamily Leptininae of the Silphidae. The purpose of this paper is to summarize the widely scattered geographic records and literature on the distribution and biology of the beaver beetle, Platypsyllus castoris Ritsema, in North America. Based on newly discovered characters on the male genitalia, external morphology and an accumulation of ecological data, we revise the single member of the genus Hemiquedius. Two new species, H. infinitus Brunke & Smetana, sp. n. and H. castoris Brunke & Smetana, sp. n., from eastern North America are described, and H. ferox (LeConte), restricted to peninsular Florida, is re-described. Hemiquedi...

The Rosaceous longhorn beetle (RLHB), Osphranteria coerulescens Redtenbacher (Coleoptera: Cerambycidae) is a significant pests of fruit orchard in Iran and it is costly to control it. During an ongoing project on natural enemies of O. coerulescens in Mashhad region, North East of Iran, two isolates of entomopathogenic fungi (EPF) were isolated as natural pathogens on the larvae. The fungal isol...

The effects of host plants on the feeding indices and chemical activities of elm leaf beetle, Xanthogaleruca luteola (Muller) (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae)

ABSTRACT- Elm leaf beetle (ELB), Xanthoga leruca luteola (Muller), is considered as one of the most important and destructive phytophagous pests of Ulmus species in the north of Iran. In the current study, the effects of three host plants including Ulmus carpinifolia, U. carpinifolia var. umbraculifera, and Zelkova carpinifolia, on feeding indices and biochemical processes of ELB were examined ...

The Banded Elm Bark Beetle, Scolytus schevyrewi Semenov (Coleoptera, Curculionidae, Scolytinae) in North America: a taxonomic review and modifications to the Wood (1982) key to the species of Scolytus Geoffroy in North and Central America

In 2003, an Asian bark beetle, Scolytus schevyrewi Semenov (Coleoptera: Curculionidae: Scolytinae), the banded elm bark beetle, was detected for the first time in North America. This paper modifies the Wood (1982) key to the species of Scolytus Geoffroy to enable identification of Scolytus schevyrewi in North and Central America. Variation of diagnostic characters in Scolytus schevyrewi is disc...
